Investing in our transformation
Empowering BAT’s sustainability strategy, we make strategic investments that drive transformation and innovation across our four pillars of Circularity, Climate, Nature and Communities.
By harnessing the power of the Impact Lab, BTV looks to create value to all parties through supporting strategic partnerships with investment. In doing so, we help unlock doors to scale and expertise.

For people and the planet
In 2022, FlexSea – an investment that uses seaweed as a natural alternative to single-use plastic – won our annual Battle of Minds competition, which pits some of the most competitive minds in the industry against each other to secure our funding and support. This was followed by its participation in our Impact Lab in 2023, which resulted in a strategic partnership that opened doors to BAT’s leading R&D capabilities and expertise and finally by investment from BTV. This investment is driving the commercialisation and success of FlexSea’s exciting, innovative and novel technology.
Also journeying through our Sustainable Packaging Impact Lab programme, in 2024 we announced our investment into one.five. Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, one.five is a packaging technology platform focused on developing and launching sustainable packaging solutions to replace single-use plastics for the consumer-packaged goods industry. Its approach can make it easier for brands across industries to reduce waste and increase packaging efficiency, supporting the transition towards a circular and climate neutral / Net Zero economy.
In April 2025, we expanded our sustainable packaging portfolio further with an investment into Bloom Biorenewables. Founded in 2019, Bloom has developed a breakthrough technology that converts biomass – such as wood and hazelnut shells – into functional materials. This process offers an alternative to petroleum-based materials for use in applications such as fragrance, packaging, and biofuels. Bloom’s innovation supports the shift towards bio-based materials and circular value chains, aligning closely with BAT's sustainability agenda.
Similar to the FlexSea relationship, BAT will explore strategic opportunities with one.five and Bloom to leverage their respective technological capabilities to inform and support BAT’s packaging decisions. These partnerships enable BAT to access a pipeline of cutting-edge solutions that support its ambition to transition towards more sustainable and innovative packaging options.
